Why a healthy animal can still be the wrong one to breed from
Every health test a breeder runs looks at one animal.
A breeder I spoke to recently, who has kept a rare native breed for close to fifty years, used two words I hadn't heard put quite so plainly before: a green mating and a red one. A green mating brings together two animals whose lines are far enough apart that the offspring gain the benefit of fresh variation. A red mating doubles down on relatives — it might produce a lovely-looking foal or pup, but it takes another quiet bite out of the diversity the breed has left. She spends a great deal of her time avoiding red matings, because in a population as small as hers, a few of them in a row can do real and lasting damage.
I have been thinking about that conversation since, because it names something that a lot of the health infrastructure around breeding quietly steps around. Almost every test a responsible breeder runs — hips, elbows, eyes, the DNA panels for the conditions that matter in a given breed — looks at one animal. It tells you whether this dog or this horse is sound, and whether it carries the specific faults you can screen for. That is enormously valuable, and I don't want a word of this piece to be read as talking it down. But it is not the whole picture, and the part it leaves out is the part that decides whether a breed has a future.
The test that no single animal can pass
Here is the uncomfortable truth at the centre of it. You can have a stallion who is sound, correct, fully licensed and clear on every screen you can run. You can have a mare who is exactly the same. And the mating between them can still be a poor decision — not because of anything wrong with either of them individually, but because of how closely related they already are, and how little variation is left in the population they both come from.
Whether a mating is wise is a property of the pair, and of the population behind the pair. It is not a property you can read off either parent on their own. This is why two entirely healthy animals can make a bad breeding decision together, and why "but they're both health-tested" is not, by itself, an answer to the question of whether they should be bred.
Geneticists have a number for this: the coefficient of inbreeding, usually shortened to COI. It estimates, from the pedigree, the probability that the two copies of a given gene an animal inherits are identical because they trace back to the same common ancestor. A COI near zero means the parents were essentially unrelated. A high COI means a lot of doubling-up. The higher it climbs, the more likely it is that hidden recessive faults — the ones no panel screens for, because nobody has identified them yet — get expressed, and the more the animal's own genetic "library" narrows. Inbreeding depression, the loss of vigour, fertility and longevity that comes with sustained close breeding, is not a superstition. It is one of the most repeatedly demonstrated findings in animal genetics, across every species anyone has looked at.
Why the small breeds feel it first
For a popular breed with tens of thousands of animals, there is usually enough room to manage this without anyone thinking about it too hard. For a rare breed, there isn't.
The relevant idea here is effective population size — not how many animals exist, but how many are actually contributing their genes to the next generation. It is almost always a great deal smaller than the headcount, because a handful of popular sires tend to dominate, because many animals never breed at all, and because the breeding animals are often already related to one another. A breed can have a few hundred registered individuals and an effective population size in the low dozens. Below certain thresholds, geneticists start using words like "critical," and they mean it: the breed is losing variation faster than it can generate it, and every generation the room to make a green mating gets a little smaller.
This is the quiet arithmetic underneath a lot of the heritage-breed conversations we have been having. When a breeder tells me there were fourteen purebred foals born in the whole country last year, the number that should worry you is not the fourteen. It is what those fourteen are doing to the average relatedness of the breed — whether they widen the gene pool or narrow it, whether they were green matings or red ones. A breed does not usually die because the last animal dies. It becomes unviable long before that, when the remaining animals are all so closely related that every possible mating is a red one.
The tools that exist, and the ones that don't
The good news is that the people who run studbooks are not blind to this. Serious breed societies increasingly publish COI figures alongside pedigrees, so a breeder can see the relatedness of a proposed mating before committing to it. Some have gone further and adopted formal population-management software — tools that model the whole breed as a system and can tell a breeder which pairings would do the most good for diversity, not just which would produce the nicest individual. The breeder I mentioned at the start uses exactly this kind of system, recently rolled into her breed's central database. It is the difference between managing a breed by instinct and managing it with a map.
The bad news is that almost none of this reaches the person at the other end of the transaction — the buyer. A prospective owner looking at a stud, or at a foal or a puppy, is shown photographs, a pedigree they usually can't read, and a list of health tests that all describe one animal. They are almost never shown the one number that captures whether this particular mating was a responsible contribution to the breed or a withdrawal from its account. The information exists. It simply doesn't travel.
What a platform can honestly do
I want to be careful here, because this is exactly the sort of subject where a marketplace can overpromise. GenoVaq does not do genetics. We do not calculate anyone's coefficients, we do not run the population models, and we would be foolish to present ourselves as an authority on the science. That work belongs to the studbooks, the breed geneticists, and the breeders who have spent decades learning their own lines.
What a platform can do is carry the information that already exists, and make it legible to the person who needs it. When a breed society publishes a COI, we can show it on the listing, in plain language, next to an explanation of what it means and does not mean. When a stud is managed with diversity in mind — when a breeder can say, truthfully, that they turn mares away rather than make a red mating — we can make that visible, because it is precisely the kind of responsibility that the current market gives a breeder no way to signal. And when a breed is small enough that every mating matters, we can put the population picture in front of a buyer alongside the individual animal, so that the decision is made with both in view.
None of that is a substitute for the health testing of the individual animal. It sits alongside it. A good breeding decision needs both: the single-animal tests that tell you this animal is sound, and the population-level picture that tells you this pairing is wise. The mistake is to think the first can stand in for the second. A shelf full of clear certificates on two closely related parents is not a green mating. It is a red one with excellent paperwork.
Why we bother with the hard version
It would be easier to leave all of this out. Coefficients of inbreeding and effective population size are not the stuff of an easy sell, and a marketplace has every commercial incentive to keep a listing simple, flattering and frictionless. But the whole reason for building GenoVaq the way we have is a belief that the people who buy responsibly-bred animals are more sophisticated than the market gives them credit for, and that they would rather understand what they are looking at than be sold to.
The breeders we most admire already think in these terms. They turn down the convenient mating for the correct one. They keep the breed's account in credit at some cost to their own. The least a platform can do is make that visible — so that the buyer who cares can find them, reward them, and understand exactly why a green mating was worth waiting for.
