Starmaking Phesi, known as Bear, is a white and lemon working Clumber Spaniel standing at stud in Wiltshire with his owner, a veterinary surgeon. He carries the Venaticus working line on his sire’s side — his sire, Venaticus Ivan, is out of Venaticus Henrietta, the breed’s most highly awarded bitch since 1900 — and is described on the Working Clumber Spaniel Society stud register as a jovial, enthusiastic and capable dog who leaves no blade of grass unscented, with an incredible nose and a gentle nature. He is proven at stud, with one Kennel Club registered litter of seven born in April 2025.

Sire: Venaticus Ivan (Sugar Loaf Washington Whissgig, imported from Sweden, ex Venaticus Henrietta). Dam: Ruelowhill’s Cleopatra (Stonechat Gunner ex Worshamview Summer Breeze). His paternal grandam, Venaticus Henrietta, was the most highly awarded Clumber bitch since 1900, from the kennel that has held an unbroken working line since the mid-1970s. His paternal grandsire is a Swedish import, which brings outside blood into a small UK population. Coefficient of inbreeding (Royal Kennel Club): 13.9%, against a breed average of 15.1% — calculated from 23 available generations, of which four are complete. As the Kennel Club itself notes, it is the inbreeding coefficient of a proposed mating, not of the individual dog, that should guide a decision; the figure is published here so a bitch owner can run that calculation.

Worked in the field. Described by his owner on the Working Clumber Spaniel Society stud register as great in the field, with an incredible nose, and a pleasure to have as a companion on any occasion. Very affectionate with the whole household, including the other dogs, the cat and the sheep, and has helped rear Labrador puppies in the family — a role, his owner notes, he took remarkably seriously. No show or field trial record is claimed on the register, and none is claimed here.

Hip Estimated Breeding Value (Royal Kennel Club): −6, low risk, at 74% confidence — meaning his family data as well as his own score place him below the breed’s average genetic risk for hip dysplasia.
