Battersea uses celebrity fashion collaboration to challenge extreme-breeding trends

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has expanded its long-running Cost of Cute campaign with a celebrity-backed slogan clothing collection, aiming to draw attention to the health problems linked to breeding pets for exaggerated physical features. The London charity worked with public figures including Tasha Ghouri, Vicky Pattison and Pandora Christie to design a range carrying slogans such as "Hot girls just want healthy pets," using the language of social media trends to reach audiences who might not otherwise engage with a welfare message. The collection launched in early August 2026, with proceeds going to Battersea's rehoming and care work.

The campaign's target is what charities increasingly call "extreme conformation" — physical traits, often popularised by breeds such as the French Bulldog, that photograph well but can cause lifelong breathing, mobility or skin problems. Battersea's rehoming and welfare manager, Laura Alwen, said the charity regularly sees dogs and cats given up because owners cannot manage the vet bills or care that come with a pet bred to look a certain way. Campaigns head Caroline Jenkins described the fashion collaboration as an attempt to "use a positive trend to disrupt a harmful one."

The approach reflects a wider shift among welfare charities toward meeting the public where breed-appearance trends actually spread — social media and fashion — rather than relying solely on traditional advice campaigns. For prospective owners and breeders, the underlying point holds regardless of the format: appearance-led breeding decisions can carry a lasting welfare and financial cost that only becomes visible after a pet is already home.
