World Horse Welfare Expands Portable Weighbridge Scheme for Field Officers

World Horse Welfare has added three new portable weighbridges for its field officers, bringing objective weight data to welfare visits across Britain and helping catch health problems early.

World Horse Welfare has expanded its network of portable weighbridges, giving its field officers across mainland Britain better tools for assessing horses during welfare visits. Three new units have been added, funded by Cumbria's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner and a charitable trust, bringing the total available to the charity's 16 field officers to seven, up from four previously held only at rescue centres.

The electronic scales give officers an objective bodyweight reading on the spot, rather than relying on visual condition scoring alone. That matters because an accurate weight can reveal whether a horse is dangerously underweight or carrying excess condition, support clear conversations with owners about feeding and management, and provide measurable evidence of progress - or concern - over time. Correct bodyweight data is also important for dosing medication and wormers safely, where under- or over-estimating a horse's weight can affect treatment.

For owners and breeders, the scheme is a reminder that weight is one of the simplest and most reliable indicators of equine health, and that both over- and underweight horses carry welfare risks. Field officers say having hard numbers, rather than impressions, makes it easier to agree on a management plan with an owner and to track whether it is working.
