ASPCA and IPAW Rescue Launch $1.4 Million Initiative to Expand Shelter Dog Air Transport

The ASPCA and IPAW Rescue have committed $1.4 million over four years to expand Dog Is My CoPilot's flight programme, which moves at-risk shelter dogs to areas with stronger demand for adoption.

In the United States, the ASPCA and IPAW Rescue, a philanthropic initiative founded by Carl C. Icahn, have announced a multi-year funding commitment of $1.4 million to Dog Is My CoPilot, a non-profit that flies shelter dogs and cats to parts of the country where they are more likely to be adopted. The ASPCA is providing $1,000,000 over four years, with IPAW Rescue contributing a further $400,000, to expand the organisation's flight capacity.

Dog Is My CoPilot already transports more than 8,000 dogs and cats a year using its own aircraft, and has flown over 50,000 animals since it was founded in 2012. Most flights move dogs out of high-intake shelters in states such as California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas to adoption partners on the East and West Coasts. The funding sits alongside the ASPCA's own relocation programme, which has moved more than 300,000 animals since 2014 across 40 states, working with around 140 partner shelters.

The initiative responds to sustained pressure on American shelters: nearly six million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in the US last year, and animals, dogs in particular, are tending to stay longer before being adopted. By flying animals from overcrowded regions to areas with stronger demand, programmes like this aim to ease pressure on individual shelters while giving more dogs a realistic route to a permanent home, an approach that offers a useful model for rescue and rehoming organisations elsewhere in the English-speaking world.
